Antonio, master ceramist
Antonio learnt to use the potter’s wheel as a boy directly from the old masters in Grottaglie. Today, he is one of the few in the area who knows how to use it so skilfully. Friendly and easygoing, it will be a pleasure to learn from him.

Italian and English (on request: French, Spanish, Portuguese...)
All the tools and materials to make your own artwork during the ceramic workshop at the potter’s wheel
Wear comfortable clothing (you might get dirty)
Bring a jacket during the cold season
The shipping costs of what you will have produced during the pottery experience are NOT included, in case you want to receive it at home after firing it in the artisan’s kiln (consider that freshly worked clay must be left to dry for several days and then fired so that it can be transported)
Antonio will welcome you to one of the historical ceramic workshops in Grottaglie, which has been owned by his wife’s family for several centuries. During the pottery experience, you will also admire an ancient combustion kiln, used until the 1950s to bake terracotta.
At the beginning of the ceramic workshop, Antonio will tell you about the history of ceramics from Grottaglie and how this Southern Italy’s town still has the largest ceramic production district in Europe. Next, Antonio will explain and show you the process of working with clay, up to its firing and decoration. You will thus discover the differences between the techniques used in the past and those used today.
Next, getting to the heart of the pottery experience, you will roll up your sleeves and – under Antonio’s expert guidance – learn how to shape clay on a potter’s wheel to turn it into your own artwork. Please note that fresh clay is not transportable and, should you wish to take your work home, you can either go back to the workshop to pick it up after a couple of weeks or have Antonio ship it to you once it has been dried and fired (shipping costs not included in the price of the ceramic experience).
Modelling clay is a relaxing artistic activity, suitable for all ages. During the ceramic workshop, you will have time to chat with Antonio to ask him all the questions you want and learn more about his story as a master ceramist.

We loved the pottery experience hosted by Loliv in the ceramics town of Grottaglie. We did the class as a family activity with our 3 and 5 year old and they both had a turn of the wheel. The guys at Loliv and Antonio were just wonderful with our kids and made them feel welcome and at ease. It was definitely one of the best experiences we had in Puglia! Highly recommend.
I would highly recommend this or other experiences with Loliv. My husband and I were travelling in the Puglia region and wanted to connect with locals – difficult as we don’t speak Italian! This was the perfect opportunity. From the easy organisation to the highly-skilled instructor, the whole experience was fantastic.. Grazie Claudio, Antonio & team!
The pottery experience with Antonio was fantastic! So special to visit a historical working ceramics shop and see how the trade has evolved over the centuries. Antonio is so knowledgeable and open to sharing his expertise. The ceramics themselves are beautiful and of course, it’s so much fun to try it yourself! Would recommend to anyone interested in crafts, history and getting your hands dirty!
