Alessia e Matteo, masters of pizzica
Pizzica runs through the veins of Alessia and Matteo, sister and brother. They started playing and dancing the pizzica both within the family and following the village elders from a very young age. Today, they are two of the youngest representatives of folk culture in Puglia. From house parties to public squares, to important stages such as Cinecittà World – with them tradition and innovation come together in a perfect fusion.

Wear comfortable clothes to learn to dance pizzica
The pizzica dance class can take place at a location of your choice, where Alessia and Matteo will join you on the agreed day and time, or in Villa Castelli, the home town of the two pizzica masters.
At the beginning of the pizzica lesson, Alessia and Matteo will explain you the history of Apulian folk music and in particular that of Villa Castelli, the meeting point between the Lower Murgia and Salento. They will also explain what "tarantismo" is – a social phenomenon linked to folk music, which characterised Southern Italy until the middle of the last century.
Next, getting to the heart of the pizzica class, Alessia and Matteo will teach you how to dance the pizzica pizzica, typical of the Upper Salento area. During the pizzica dance workshop, you will learn the basic steps of the traditional dance and how to move to the rhythm of the drum and the accordion. You will practice the dance in all its forms and see its evolution to the present day. Alessia and Matteo’s aim will be to get you in touch with the most “primordial” part of you and let you express yourself in a free and natural way.
The pizzica experience will end with a convivial moment during which, while enjoying a typical Apulian aperitif based on local products such as wine, taralli and friselle, you will be able to ask Alessia and Matteo all the questions you want to learn more about their story and clear up any doubts about this magnificent musical and artistic tradition.
